The golf shaft is the most critical part of the golf club. Playing the wrong shaft for your swing will significantly impact your golf game. Updating and replacing the shaft in your driver or irons can help you have newer and higher-performing equipment for a fraction of the cost.

The way that shafts have become easier to install, many golfers will install them in their own garage. I have tested out quite a few different golf shafts to see which are the best on the market. Here are four of the best iron shafts and driver shafts on the market in 2022.

Many golfers think they will just change the shaft in their driver when they need a new feel. However, the problem becomes that the price of a golf driver shaft is quite expensive. You could end up finding out that the golf driver shaft costs more than the price of a new golf driver from the manufacturer.

For players on a budget that are still looking for excellent performance and feel, the Grafalloy ProLaunch Blue 65 is a perfect choice. This is a very lightweight golf shaft option built for higher ball speed and higher ball flight. However, you will still get plenty of roll.

Although high-performing golf shafts tend to be higher in price and offer the most impressive feel, we have to say that the Grafalloy has some excellent value associated with it.

  • Very long distance golf drive
  • Just enough tip stiffness for stability at impact

  • Will have a bit of vibration at impact being one of the cheaper golf shafts on the market

For many years, golfers did not have nearly as many golf shaft options as they do today. This led to people playing the same few golf shafts. For some lucky people, the True Temper Dynamic Gold was the shaft of choice.

Everything about the True Temper Dynamic Gold is high-performing and highly rated. Whether you are looking for distance, consistency, or impressive feel from your set of irons, the True Temper Dynamic Gold can get it done.

The Dynamic Gold shafts come in various flexes, but the regular steel tends to be the best choice for the average golfers looking for a lower ball flight and more control. For those switching from graphite to steel shafts, this is a great option to consider.

  • Easy to control the ball flight
  • One of the most popular shafts of all times
  • Flexible for a steel shaft

  • Will be a bit heavier in weight than some of the high performance lightweight steel shafts

The Project X LZ Golf Shafts are a premium choice for those that want only the best in their irons. The thing that sets the Project X LZ Shafts apart from others on the market is the feel. The feel of these golf clubs will allow golfers to work the ball quite a bit more. If you want to hit a draw or a fade on demand, the Project X LZ can help.

Another great thing about this golf shaft option is that it comes in a progressive weight profile. This means that the stiffer the shaft gets, the heavier it gets as well. This tends to be a good match for most players because faster swing speed players need the weight and stiffer flex in their shafts.

  • Softer mid section for better feel
  • Loading Zone Technology to help increase energy transfer
  • Higher ball flight even on the miss hits

The True Temper Elevate 95 Golf Shafts are built for golfers looking for more spin in their golf shafts. Although low spin is becoming valuable on driver shots, higher spin is necessary for great ball flight and getting the ball to stop on the green.

There is a new technology built into the True Temper Elevate called VSS Technology. The idea behind this is to help reduce vibrations and get a much softer feel. In addition, players will get higher spin and a golf ball that stops and holds on a green.

  • Very lightweight golf shaft
  • Higher ball flight
  • Ball will hold on the greens

  • Not a great choice for the faster swing speed player

The problem with graphite iron shafts is that they tend to make it difficult to control the ball. As soon as you add some swing speed to your golf shots, you may have difficulty keeping the ball in play. The SteelFiber i80 allows for a great combination of graphite and steel feel, giving you much more consistency in your shots.

Anytime you look at a graphite shaft compared to a steel shaft, get ready for a higher price tag. Golf iron shafts in graphite can be costly, but this is a must for players with slower swing speeds.

  • Comes in taper and parallel tip
  • Iron shafts come pre cut
  • Helps golfers to get distance back

  • Very expensive golf shafts

What To Consider When Choosing A Golf Shaft

When purchasing a golf shaft without going for a fitting, you must understand what you need as a player. Before you look into different golf shaft options, there are some things that you should know about the game.

Swing Speed

How fast do you swing the club?

Club fitters will match the right golf shaft to your swing speed and tempo. If you have a fast swing speed, you will need a heavier, less flexible golf shaft. For players with a slower swing speed, the golf shaft needs to be lighter and more flexible.

Getting your swing speed measured at a local golf facility or with a golf professional is easy to do. Some golf smart watches will also measure swing speed, as well as a personal golf launch monitor

What are the weaknesses in your game?

Do you struggle with getting the proper ball flight? Is the distance the problem? Are you inconsistent? Try to take a really strong look at your golf game and what is good and bad about your abilities. If you can determine your weaknesses, you can choose better equipment to help you overcome them.

What do you do well on the golf course?

Is the driver the best part of your game? Do you love chipping? Maybe there is a reason that these golf clubs are as good as they are. The golf shaft in the clubs could be very well suited for your game, and therefore it makes sense to pay attention to this equipment when choosing your new golf shaft.

Ball Flight

Some players hit their golf shots too high; others don’t hit them high enough. A golf shaft can have a significant impact on the ball flight of your shots. Paying attention to the weight and the kick point of the shaft will help ensure that you put a club into your bag that will help you succeed and improve.

Understanding The Different Types of Golf Shafts

There are several types of golf shafts on the market. Aside from the brand name, you will have to understand what sets one golf shaft apart from another. These are five of the top characteristics to look for when comparing one golf shaft to another.

Golf shafts come in either graphite or steel material. The steel golf shafts are typically heavier and can help golfers control the shots that they are hitting. Steel golf shafts will be used mostly in irons and wedges. Graphite golf shafts are built for longer clubs, distance, and a softer feel at impact.

The typically flex choices for golf clubs are extra stiff, stiff, regular, senior, and ladies. The flex of the shaft in your clubs should be directly correlated to a player’s swing speed.

Golf shaft length will change from one club to the next. When you order a set of golf shafts for irons, ensure that they are the proper lengths for the clubs you will be putting them in. The golf shaft length should be determined based on player height.

Kick Point

The kick point is the point in the shaft where it experiences the greatest amount of bend. The lower kick point shaft produces a higher ball flight. The higher kick point shaft will produce lower ball flight.

A golf shaft’s weight will vary depending on the material and the length of the shaft. However, it is essential to note that heavier golf shafts are for faster swinging players, and lighter weight golf shafts are for slower swinging players. The heavy golf shafts also tend to lower the ball flight that you are capable of hitting.

Difference Between Driver and Iron Shafts

Now that you have a better understanding of what separates one golf shaft from another, you may be curious about the differences between driver and iron shafts.

The two main differences that you will see between a driver shaft and an iron shaft are the length and the material. A typical driver shaft will be around 45 inches. The iron shafts all fall around 37 inches or so and go up and down from there.

In addition, the driver, fairway wood, and hybrid shafts are going to be graphite material. Iron and wedge shafts can be either graphite or steel.

Having to replace your entire set of golf clubs is tough. The costs are high, and it can be frustrating that your current set is not working for you. However, most of the time, the set is not working because the shaft is not a good fit.

The driver and iron shafts that I recommended can change your entire game. Amateur golfers need to understand that the golf shaft will be an even more critical part of the club than the head in most instances. Don’t be afraid to play around with different golf shaft options; the more you learn about the equipment, the better it is for your game.
